About Navratri

Navratri ( Tamil: நவராத்திரி, Malayalam: നവരാത്രി, Marathi: नवरात्रि, Bengali: নবরাত্রি, Sanskrit: नवरात्रि, Kannada:ನವರಾತ್ರಿ) is a Hindu festival of worship and dance. The word Navaratri literally means nine nights in Sanskrit. During these nine nights and ten days, nine forms of Shakti/Devi i.e. female divinity are worshipped.

Significance of Navratri

The beginning of spring and the beginning of autumn are two very important junctions of climatic and solar influence. These two periods are taken as sacred opportunities for the worship of the Divine Mother. The dates of the festival are determined according to the lunar calendar.

Dasahara, meaning ‘ten days’, becomes dasara in popular parlance. The Navaratri festival or ‘nine day festival’ becomes ‘ten day festival’ with the addition of the last day, Vijayadashami which is its culmination. On all these ten days, the various forms of Mother Mahisasura-mardini (Durga) are worshipped with fervour and devotion.

Initially, Katrina Kaif was supposed to do an item song for Blue Hindi movie but then, her presence was extended. Katrina Kaif was paired up Zayed Khan in the movie. Currently, the top actress of Bollywood, Katrina Kaif was offered a whopping Rs. 1.5 crore for the item number. While shooting the movie, her role was further extended. News reports also said that Katrina Kaif shot the item number within ten days.

About the Movie:

The film is about a treasure  buried deep at the bottom of an ocean which three friends (Akshay Kumar , Sanjay Dutt and Zayed Khan ) try to find undersea. Many others also want to get there by risking life, be it theirs or someone else’s. Blue is inspired from Hollywood films ‘Jaws’ or ‘The Deep’ but it is not a copy. The Music of the movie is produced by A.R.Rehman. The movie is scheduled to release on October 16, 2009.

Movie Synopsis: (Don’t read if you don’t wanna know the story)

Sagar (Sanjay Dutt) and Sam (Zayed Khan) are brothers who are interested in treasure. Along with Mona (Lara Dutta), Sagar’s wife, they travel to the Bahamas in search of a mysterious treasure hidden 200 feet deep within the sea. Along the way, they meet Aarav (Akshay Kumar) who is searching for the same treasure. But they don’t know is that Aarav is a devious con-artist who would stop at nothing to get what he wants. The treasure is gurded by sharks, sting rays, and other marine animals. The rest of the story deals with the 4 characters go diving deep withing the sea in search of the treasure. Nikki’s (Katrina) part in the movie is still undercover.

All New Ford Endeavour

So, it’s GAME ON! for the SUVs in India. A few days back, Toyota launched their SUV (Sports Utility Vehicle) Fortuner and seeing the competition, India’s leading auto manufacturer Ford India launched the newer version of its most popular SUV (Sports Utility Vehicle) model, Ford Endeavour in Indian market with new design and with five speed automatic transmission in 3.0L Ford Endeavour and with an array of new features on September 9th.

The new Endeavour features new more stylish exteriors with a new-look front design with a multi-bar chrome grille and chrome-accented lower grille and new sporty head lamps which is placed next to the grille that make its front much aggressive.

The new variant has a touch screen (7″ Inch) satellite navigation system, built-in DVD player which supports all popular file formats, a rear camera and Bluetooth compatible communication system on the Automatic Variant. This unit also has a USB Input.

Passengers in Mumbai were the worst hit with 115 flights out of the total 345 failing to take off while at least 10 flights of Jet Airways and its subsidiary JetLite were cancelled in Delhi. In Chennai, six flights were cancelled, including three international, and four in Kolkata.

However, the morning flight of the private carrier from Kolkata for Dhaka took off as scheduled, Jet Airways officials said.

Hit by the crisis, Jet Airways chairman Naresh Goyal met civil aviation secretary Madhavan Nambiar on Tuesday morning for about half-an-hour and is understood to have discussed the situation.

Ministry officials said the government was closely monitoring the situation.

Jet Airways in a press statement said that a section of the pilots have resorted to a “simulated strike by reporting sick”.

“This organised activity is a planned sabotage of operations that will damage the airline’s operations and inconvenience the travelling public,” it said.

Jet Airways said all affected guests can get a full refund or rebook themselves on an alternate date without any cancellation or reissue charges, but passengers were not amused.

“The least the airline people could have done is informed me that my flight was being cancelled,” complained VS Sharma who was to fly to Mumbai from Delhi. “I could have made alternative arrangements. Really, this is very, very bizarre.”

The pilots have been demanding the reinstatement of two of their colleagues, who were sacked recently. The airline has some 700 pilots on its rolls.

“Regrettably, a section of the pilots who were rostered for operations have resorted to a simulated strike by reporting sick,” a Jet Airways spokesperson said in a statement on Tuesday morning.

“Jet Airways is taking all steps to minimise the inconvenience to its guests. The airline will make all efforts to operate the maximum number of flights,” the statement said.

“However, perforce, some flights may have to be combined or cancelled; we will try to accommodate our guests on alternate flights.”

The newly formed National Aviators Guild, a union of some Jet Airways pilots, has called the strike. They are protesting the sacking of two of their colleagues earlier this month. The airline has declined to recognise this union.

Girish Kaushik, the president of the guild, said they had issued the mandatory 14-day notice to the airline, adding the sacking of the two pilots was an act of vendetta for starting a new union and totally unjustified.

The two sacked senior pilots, Balaraman and Sam Thomas, were told of their termination by e-mail. The pilots claim that they were given the pink slip as they were instrumental in forming the new union.

“My sincere apologies to passengers. All we want is that the management takes the two pilots back. That is our only demand,” Kaushik said. “We are not on strike. This is an individual decision by each pilot,” Kaushik said.

Jet Airways said it has had been in conciliatory talks with the union and the regional labour commissioner had warned that any strike during this period would be deemed illegal as per the Industrial Disputes Act.

The news has been confirmed by the actor himself. The season is supposed to start this December. The earlier seasons of Bigg Boss were hosted by Arshad Warsi and Shilpa Shetty. The show’s venue remains the same, but the set will be different this time.

According to sources, Amitabh won’t exactly be a host but he’ll be there to analyze the participants and see if someone is putting on an act and tell them that on their face. Looks like this is going to turn out to be one interesting show!

The ONGC Nehru Cup (Formally Nehru Cup) is a International Football tournament organized by the All India Football Federation. It was launched in 1982, but was not held between 1998 and 2007.

Nehru Cup 2009 took place in New Delhi from August 19 to August 31, 2009. After the participation of Palestine was cancelled by the AIFF, the tournament was changed into a round-robin format with five teams playing each other and the top two clashing in the final. The five teams participating in the Nehru Cup 2009 are Kyrgyzstan, Lebanon, Sri Lanka, Syria and hosts and defending champions India.

It was the first defeat in the tournament for Syria, ranked 122 in the world against India’s 151, after they had won all four round-robin matches. With the game tied at 1-1 following extra-time, India keeper Subrata Pal proved the hero as he saved Hamzeh Al Aitounim’s spot-kick as the hosts eventually triumphed 5-4.

“The boys deserved to win because they worked very hard for the tournament,” said India’s English coach Bob Houghton.

Force India’s success drought is over. After zero returns and back-benches in 29 races, Vijay Mallya’s Formula One team reached its first-ever points scoring finish with second position to Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen in the Belgium Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps on Sunday.

“This is a fitting response to our critics. We have proved our competitiveness and the fact that we are not here to roam around at the back,” Mallya said. However, despite not scoring points, the team was finishing mid-field, hinting that success was a question of when, and not whether.

In 2008, Force India spent approximately $120 million compared to Toyota’s $450 m, McLaren’s $430 m, Honda and Renault’s $395 m each and BMW’s $365 m. This year, its budget has been further reduced. An ecstatic Mallya said his team’s performance showed that money is not enough to buy results. “We have a small budget.
However, we have the right kind of focus. The team is not short on resources but we spend the money carefully, consciously and wisely. The team is a highly-motivated, tightly-knit family,” he said after the race.

Bangalore/Hyderabad — US jeans maker Levi Strauss has begun selling its denim on credit in India, offering shoppers the chance to buy trousers/apparels costing above Rs.1500 in three installments. This amount will be set off through your credit card in three equal instalments. They have also tied up with ICICI Bank for the credit card settlement. This idea is still in its early stage and is being experimented in Bangalore and a few other cities. Once successful there, the same will be implemented across India.

Frankly, my first reaction reading this was LOLZ but then, something must have struck Levi’s to come up with such a marketing strategy. When asked, Shumone Chatterjee, MD, Levi’s India, says the idea is to create an easy way for consumers to get into the brand. ‘‘Many aspire to own a Levi’s, but the price can be a barrier. The EMI scheme makes it easier for the people to build their wardrobe with a premium brand like ours,’’ says Chatterjee. Talking about the loyal customers, ‘‘The average value of their purchase was 50% higher than those who didn’t use the EMI facility,’’ says Chatterjee.

Outcome of this strategy on customers:-

1. Lower income group and middle income group can now afford branded and premium apparel.
2. Those customers who want to buy apparels on certain occasions such as birthdays or other festive occasions and even those who want to buy them to gift to others, but could not afford to do so because of tight purse strings, can now be relieved of spending too much at one point of time.
3. This strategy will be pocket friendly. However, this may increase per capita spending of the consumer as the payment is delayed. The strategy will simply make these premium brands look more affordable to bring in new sets of customers. However this lucrative offer may simply increase total spending, as it now looks affordable.
4. These sets of consumers may no longer feel Levi’s is a premium brand as it will now be affordable to all the income groups and they may not like to be associated with Levi’s anymore. This strategy may back fire on Levi’s as it may lose its upper middle class and upper class consumers.

Whatever be the case, Levi’s is bound to get into the news with their new scheme.

Harley will import the motorcycles, accessories and riding gear for sale in India, the Milwaukee-based company said in an e-mailed statement today. The company has set up an Indian unit in Gurgaon, near New Delhi.

Harley deferred its indian launch atleast thrice citing higher import duty but the success of superbikes in India in recent times could have altered its opinion. Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) is holding their ANNUAL CONVENTION 2009 on August 28. Matt Levatich, president and chief operating officer of Harley Davison is invited for the event. Harley Davidson would launch its bikes at the same time.

The New Maruti Suzuki Estilo

The new 998 CC petrol car is equipped with the latest K-series engines, on the lines of the company’s other small cars — A-Star and Ritz. It is crammed with a new five speed Detent Pin technology transmission, driver side airbag and ABS, foldable rear seats, auto adjustable ORVM, remote keyless entry system, Power windows, Power steering, front fog lamps, rear fog lamps.

The Maruti Estilo comes with integrated i-CATS, central locking and anti-theft alarm.
Maruti Zen Estilo would be available in different colors– superior white, midnight black, silky silver, dusky brown, Ecru beige, quantum orange, bright red, emerald blue and midnight black.

“Product upgradation is an integral part of Maruti Suzuki’s business strategy and future plans. This is a way to include feedback from the customers and offer better products that match their tastes,” Maruti Suzuki India Managing Director and CEO Shinzo Nakanishi told reporters.

According to the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), Estilo would run 18.2 km in every litre of petrol.

The company has dropped the very successful brand name ‘Zen‘ from the car as it views that it does not suit the current taste of Indian youth, to whom this car is targeted.

The new Estilo would be produced from MSI’s Gurgaon plant, which also manufactures the A-Star and the Ritz. The existing Zen Estilo comes with a 1.1 litre petrol engine.

The company currently produces Bharat Stage-III, Bharat Stage-IV and Euro-V emission norms compliant K-series engines. It produces two different petrol engines — 1 litre (A-Star) and 1.2 litre (Ritz) — from the fully integrated engine manufacturing facility, located at MSI’s Gurgaon plant.

Toyota Fortuner

The single variant Fortuner will be priced at Rs 18.45 lakh INR ex-showroom in the Indian Capital Delhi.

Toyota India has succeeded to keep the price low which could give them a head start against Honda and Chevrolet who are getting better market shares these days. It looks like it beats the Honda CR-V, Mitsubishi Outlander, Ford Endeavour and Chevrolet Captiva by a long shot.

Renown for reliability and technology, the new Fortuner 2009 is expected to create waves in the Indian car market.

Fortuner will have advanced features like an overhead rear seat, Bluetooth connectivity, air conditioning vents, cruise control and navigator.

Available in three variants, Toyota  aims to sell at least 2000 models  by the end of this year — which is a good goal to go for.

Toyota Fortuner will be assembled in India at its factory in  Bidadi, near Bangalore, Karnataka.

If we talk about the specification of this SUV Fortuner than the car is featured with Four wheel drive, five speed transmission, D-4D diesel with Intercooler Tubocharger which offers a displacement of 2982, Max Power 3600rpm, torque 343NM, 5 Speed gearbox, power steering, front ventilated disc brake, rare drum brakes, top speed 176km/hr, 0-100Kmph in 9.6sec, fuel tank capacity- 80lit.

Considering the cost, Fortuner seems to be a good buy for an SUV lovers.

NASSAU (Reuters) – Miss Venezuela, Stefania Fernandez, was crowned Miss Universe 2009 on Sunday, giving her country its sixth title in the international beauty pageant.

Fernandez, an 18-year-old brunette, became the 58th winner of the title in a show broadcast live around the world from the Atlantis, Paradise Island resort in the Bahamas. Miss Universe 2008 Dayana Mendoza of Venezuela placed the glittering $120,000 crown on 18-year-old Fernandez who looked pretty in a red evening gown.

It was the second consecutive year that a contestant from the oil-producing South American country, which is famous for its beauty queens, won the Miss Universe title.

Venezuela had produced five previous winners.

Fernandez was selected out of five finalists chosen from the total field of 83 contestants.

The first runner-up this year was Miss Dominican Republic, Ada Aimee de la Cruz.

The rest of the top five were from Australia, Puerto Rico, and Kosovo.

Ekta Choudhary

Delhi girl Ekta Chaudhary Monday failed to make it to the top 15 finalists of the Miss Universe 2009 contest here, dashing hopes of getting the crown back to India.

Dance Performance by Kangana was another low point of the show, she too could not move with the beats…. Oh Boy BAD Television overall. Priyanka Chopra took the cake as she danced with Gusto and picked up the performance! Apart from the crowning moment, her act was the high point of the show.

Ganesha Chaturthi (IAST: Gaṇeśa Caturthī, devanagari: गणेश चतुर्थी) or Ganesha Festival is a day on which Lord Ganesha, the son of Shiva and Parvati, is believed to bestow his presence on earth for all his devotees. It is also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi or Vinayaka Chavithi in Sanskrit, Kannada, Tamil and Telugu, Chavath ( चवथ ) in Konkani and Chathaa (चथा) in Nepali.

It is celebrated as it is the birthday of Lord Ganesha. The festival is observed in the Hindu calendar month of Bhaadrapada, starting on the shukla chaturthi (fourth day of the waxing moon period). Typically, the day usually falls between 20 August and 15 September. The festival lasts for 10 days, ending on Anant Chaturdashi . This festival is observed in the lunar month of bhadrapada shukla paksha chathurthi madhyahana vyapini purvaviddha. If Chaturthi prevails on both days, the first day should be observed. Even if chaturthi prevails for complete duration of madhyahana on the second day, but if it prevails on previous day’s madhyahana period even for one ghatika (24 minutes) the previous day should be observed.

Ganesha, the elephant-headed son of Shiva and Parvati, is widely worshipped as the supreme god of wisdom, prosperity and good fortune.

While celebrated all over India, it is most elaborate in Maharashtra, Goa (Biggest festival for Konkani people all over the world), Gujarat, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, and other areas. Outside India, it is celebrated widely in Nepal which was only Hindu Kingdom in the world and Tamil Hindus in Sri Lanka.
